Skylum Luminar AI | Al Photo Editing for Mac & PC
Luminar AI is a brand new photo editor with AI at its core. Luminar’s editing tools use artificial intelligence to quickly edit and style photos. Time-consuming edits are simplified with easy-to-use tools. Luminar AI adds even more AI-based editing tools. The focus is on results. Get your photo finished faster. In addition, Skylum Luminar AI has integrated artificial intelligence even deeper into the application engine. Luminar AI will offer stylistic treatments for your images according to the content of your photos. These are called models (more on this intriguing feature below).
Plus, Skylum Luminar AI keeps control of you, the photographer. You can still access editing tools, refine colors, adjust details, and create your signature style. The power of AI is to get your final image faster. I’ve been sticking with this for years … the tools don’t matter, the final shot matters. Whatever toolchain that helps you get your final image faster is kindness. Also, Check Out Affinity Designer Free | Professional Graphics Software Best Guides 2021
Skylum Luminar AI is not an upgrade to Luminar 4 or earlier versions. It’s a new app. There is no planned upgrade path from earlier versions of Luminar to Skylum Luminar AI Free Trial. Some more thoughts on this below. Skylum Luminar AI Looks can be migrated to Luminar AI, with the exception of tools in the “Obsolete” category in Luminar 4.
Skylum Luminar AI Review works as a stand-alone application on Windows and macOS. It also works as a plug-in for Lightroom Classic, Photoshop, and Photos for macOS. The single app works in both modes – there is no separate plug-in for Skylum Luminar AI.
Skylum Luminar AI Price is not supported as a plugin for Photoshop Elements or Apple Aperture. Minimum operating system versions are more stringent for Skylum Luminar AI. Windows 10 operating system (64-bit OS only) or macOS 10.13.6 are the minima supported operating systems. Windows 7 and 8 are not supported. MacOS 10.12 is also not supported. Full details are on the Luminar AI Plugin announcement page.

What’s Cool About Luminar AI?
Skylum is certainly all involved in AI-powered editing. Computational photography. As you would like to call it. Their goal is squarely to simplify the editing process. Luminar AI doubles on that. For landscape photographers, the Atmosphere, Color Harmony, and Mood tools are intriguing. The others touted for nature photography are refinements on what we already have. For portrait photographers, there are new Body and Bokeh tools. This is in addition to the tools we are used to from Luminar 4 for eyes, faces, and skin.
There is also a new AI composition tool. It aims to give you the most flattering crop on an image based on the elements in your photo. I see this both as a useful tool to speed up processing and as a good educational tool to train your photographic eye. First, try a crop for yourself and then compare it to the AI tool. And then use those comments for your next outing with the camera, improving your initial capture!
I really like the interface change (at least what the screenshots suggest) which shows thumbnails for the replacement skies. Hope this approach extends to other tools that use overlays like Augmented Sky, Textures, etc. Viewing thumbnails in the tool speeds up the workflow.
What’s intriguing about Skylum Luminar AI
In short, models. A model is the rough equivalent of a look in Luminar 4. That’s fine and expected. What’s interesting is that Luminar AI will suggest templates to apply to your photo based on the elements in your photo. Rather than browsing through collections of looks, the editor themselves will present the options they think will work best with your photo. It could be a great source of inspiration if you don’t know where to start with a photo.
There is a bit more than we can infer from the user interface mockups shown. Also, note that the toolbar is Catalog – Templates – Edit – Publish. This suggests a recommended workflow, with models in a leading role. Especially with Luminar AI suggesting which models may work well for your photo. Of course, you, the photographer, always have the last word. Skylum Luminar AI Support isn’t about letting go of control, it’s about speeding up your workflow.
Another thing I noted in the product briefing is the removal of layers. In the context of Skylum’s vision – to simplify editing – I can understand that. Layers take time to learn. Layers also tend to slow down editors. There are simply more pixels to handle for an application. I put layer removal under the “ intriguing ” category because for those of us who use and enjoy layers, Skylum Luminar AI will have a local adjustment tool.
This tool will accomplish what we would otherwise do with a diaper. You can make specific adjustments for areas or individual people. You can layer textures or make targeted adjustments. Local adjustments are also easier to sync with multiple photos and can be stored in a Luminar AI template.
1-The Workspace is Cleaned
When you first open Luminar AI, you will notice that it consists of 4 main workspaces: Catalog, Models, Edit, and Export. Especially, if you have used other photo editors before, you will immediately notice that the interface of Luminar AI is much more refined. The catalog is a collection of all photos, single image edits, recent additions, recent edits, and the recycle bin. You can also manually add albums and folders.
Templates are AI-based presets that automatically analyze the content of each photo and suggest the best edits for that photo. Edit is a collection of all editing tools grouped into 4 panels: Essentials, Creative, Portraits, and Professional. The export offers several saving options: Save to disk, Mail, Messages, SmugMug, and 500px. Also Check Out Graphicriver Modern 3D Text Effects Latest Version 2021 Download
Adding images is easy in Skylum Luminar AI is pretty straightforward. You can either click the + icon in the top bar or add one or more images or even an entire folder by simply dragging it into the Luminar AI window. Depending on your computer’s specifications, you may be able to import multiple images within seconds.
The catalog allows you to sort and filter all your images. Plus, you can use filters to find any photo pretty quickly. In the long run, folders and albums will keep your photos organized. Folders are literally the folders on your hard drive, which you can import into Luminar AI. So any changes you make directly affect the real folders on your drive, and vice versa. Albums, on the other hand, are virtual folders that you can create in Luminar AI that have no effect on files on your computer. It’s a much better option if you don’t want to mess up your files.
2-Models are Automatic Presets
The models are the biggest change you’ll see when moving from Luminar 4 to Skylum Luminar AI. You can think of the models as automatic presets powered by AI. Every time you use them, the AI analyzes the objects, colors, and landscapes in your photo and applies the best possible change based on its analysis. But that’s not all. Each template is individually adjusted for your photo, which means the same template will be recommended for multiple photos, but it will be changed for each one.
How to use the models in Luminar AI?
Open an image and click Templates at the top of the window. In the right sidebar, Luminar AI will instantly offer you a handful of already installed templates. By selecting one of the collections, Easy Landscapes in my example, Skylum Luminar AI will open a series of 6 models. You can click on it to instantly apply the changes. However, these changes are not permanent. You can click Edit on the top bar and adjust the template as you like.
I liked using the templates because they allowed me to quickly try over 10 different edits which gave me a general idea of how I want to edit the photo. However, in the end, I always reset the adjustments and make all the changes myself, but this is only a personal preference as I love editing?
To sum up, I think the templates are very useful for beginners, who don’t have any photo editing experience, and for professionals who just want to quickly experiment with a few different styles to find the best one.
3- AIl Tools for Advanced Photo Editing
The Edits workspace is where you can make all of your adjustments. If you started with a template, this is where you adjust. If you’re starting over, use these tools to make adjustments.
Some of the most impressive tools for me, and I’m sure you’ll love them too, are the AccentAI, SkyAI, and Portrait tools. The latter, in particular, will save you hours of your time that you would otherwise have spent masking and “liquefying” in Photoshop.
I have previously commented on the sky replacement in Luminar 4 and loved the precision with which this tool obscured the sky in my shots. However, it didn’t factor in reflections in the count, making the replacement in such images pretty obvious. I was delighted to find that the new SkyAI adds reflections to the water and other reflective areas.
In the comparison below, I demonstrated how powerful SkyAI is. I managed to easily add a new sky to my image. In addition, the tool viewed the roofs, the bridge, and even the crane in the background. Best of all, Luminar AI added sky reflection to the water, making the sky replacement imperceptible.
In summary, SkyAI is a great way to change the sky in your photos if you have no previous photo editing experience. Plus, it does all of this automatically. You just choose a background and this tool will hide the old sky, add a new one, and adjust the colors.
How to Add Skies in Luminar AI?
To add skies in Luminar AI, do the following:
- Open Luminar AI
- Click Edit in the top bar
- Access the creative sections of the tools
- Click on SkyAI
- Click on Sky Selection
- Scroll down until you see a plus icon and click on it
- Find your sky files and click Open
As a landscape photographer, I use the AtmosphereAI tool whenever I want to add an extra ‘wow factor to my photos. This tool allows you to add fog, layered fog, haze, and haze in your photos. Additionally, Luminar AI appears to be able to recognize the depth of an image and the distance of objects, as it “knows” how to add fog behind trees and other objects.
However, this feature does not always work as expected. The photographs of the forest in particular seem to confuse AtmosphereAI. As a result, Skylum Luminar AI often masks in or out of a tree that shouldn’t have been. I just hated it when the tool failed to apply where it should have left you with no options to fix it. Atmosphere, however, has three settings that let you adjust the fog applied, but none of them fixed the aforementioned issue.
The depth slider controls the percentage of the photo covered in fog, while the brightness makes the fog light or dark. The Skylum team has promised that drizzle and steam will arrive soon.
The body and FaceAI tools are designed to sculpt and refine portraits, refining the body and enhancing faces. I think both of these tools will be very popular among Instagram models, influencers, and photographers working with models because they make it ridiculously easy to create a slim body and chiseled face.
Alternatively, Photoshop is able to do the same, but it requires a lot more effort and experience. In Skylum Luminar AI, you just need to drag a slider – it’s that easy.
IrisAI is a renowned tool that creates rich and expressive eyes – in Luminar 4 it was known as Eye Enhancer. This tool changes the color, shape, size, brightness and even improves the texture of the iris. Moreover, it also works on multiple people in a single photo. This feature is not really useful but definitely fun – you can apply owl or cat eyes to the subject.
BokehAI is coming soon and I am very excited about this one. In general, it’s hard to produce nice bokeh – you need an expensive lens, a large aperture, and a good background. The BokehAI tool will give anyone the opportunity to create portraits with beautiful bokeh. I think the Skylum team will also offer an option of different bokeh shapes.
Composition AI is a brand new Skylum Luminar AI Promo Code tool that automatically recognizes elements in your photo and then crops the photos in the best possible way. But does it really work? Based on my testing, CompositionAI closely follows the Rule of Thirds. While this is quite a feat, I can follow the rule of thirds on my own and I don’t need an AI to do that. I would expect AI to do more, like finding new compositions.
Therefore, I always prefer to crop the photos myself. Also, just like Lightroom, Skylum Luminar AI can also straighten photos automatically, but for some reason, Composition AI doesn’t do this automatically. As you can see in the screenshot above, CompositionAI automatically cropped the photo following the rule of thirds (it placed the haystack in the intersection at the top left).
This tool adds detail and texture to your photos. The AI behind it recognizes objects and applies texture accordingly. For example, it won’t apply any texture to people, but it will give the water some texture and rocks or grass a lot of texture.
AccentAI makes all the basic adjustments itself, creating natural lighting and enhancing colors. It works the same as Lightroom’s “Automatic settings” feature; however, Luminar AI’s artificial intelligence identifies the subjects in the photo and applies settings accordingly.
As the name suggests, this tool enhances the skies by giving them texture and color. I never use this tool, because although Luminar promises natural-looking results, they never look great.
Sky AI Improved
It’s the same tool that raised our eyebrows when it was first introduced with Luminar update 4.2. It allows you to add various elements, such as mountains, clouds, birds, giraffes (??), hot air balloons, aurora, etc. in your images.
Color harmony consists of several tools: Brightness, Warmth, Color Contrast, Split Color Warmth, and Color Balance. These sliders are all aimed at enhancing and correcting the color tones in your photos.
Changes the color palette of a photo-based on Lookup Tables (LUTs).
Brings warm accents to photos, imitating the light around sunrises and sunsets called the golden hour.
Adds a new sun and sun rays to the image, giving you control over their position, warmth, and overall appearance. In addition, you can also set the penetration, the number of solar rays, and even the radius of the sun.
Allows you to separately control the contrast in highlights, mid-tones, and shadows. This is especially useful for high-contrast scenes, such as scenery.
4. Luminar AI as a Plugin
Let’s not talk about Skylum Luminar AI as an alternative to Lightroom, but let’s focus on how you can use it with Lightroom to improve your photo editing. With every purchase of Skylum Luminar AI, you get both a standalone app and a plugin version that you can use with the following apps:
- Lightroom Classic (from version 6)
- Photoshop (from version CS5)
- Photos for macOS
To install Luminar AI as a plugin, first, install it as a standalone app. Once installed, open it, click on LuminarAI in the upper left corner, go to File and Install Plugins. Skylum Luminar AI will automatically detect which of the three previously mentioned apps you have installed and your computer and give you the option to connect with them.
If you have successfully installed Skylum Luminar AI as a plug-in, you will be able to open it from Lightroom, Photoshop, and/or Photos for macOS Skylum Luminar AI does not try to be an alternative to other photo editors, but rather encourages creativity by offering its tools as a plugin for Lightroom or Photos, hence giving you more creative options.
